The entire effigy is encircled by a beaded cord or dotted border, characteristic of Armorican Celtic coinage. The facial anatomy is abstracted, with the eye rendered as a prominent pellet or boss and the chin sharply defined. The composition reflects the dynamic, curvilinear decorative vocabulary typical of late Gaulish silver issues. |

The Veneti of Armorica were the dominant maritime power on the Atlantic coast of Gaul before Caesar's fleet destroyed them at the Battle of Morbihan in 56 BC — after which the tribe effectively ceased to exist as an independent political entity. Their coinage, struck in the decade or so preceding that defeat, is among the few material traces of a culture Caesar himself described at length in the Gallic Wars. This stater belongs to that narrow window of production.
