Tincomarus — son of Commius, the Atrebatic king who had served Caesar as an envoy before spectacularly defecting during the Gallic Wars — issued coins during a period of intensifying Roman diplomatic pressure on southern Britain. His name appears Latinized on several issues, suggesting deliberate accommodation of Roman tastes, and ancient sources confirm he eventually fled to Augustus, likely around 7 BC, driven out by his brother Eppillus. This minim, struck a decade or more before that exile, belongs to the earlier phase of his rule, before that accommodation became survival.
