| Obverse description | Robert I of Anjou enthroned in majesty, facing, flanked by a rampant lion to each side, holding a globus cruciger in his right hand and a sceptre in his left. The figure is rendered in a flat, Gothic stylised manner characteristic of medieval Provençal hammered coinage. A peripheral legend in uncial Latin characters surrounds the royal effigy within a beaded border. |

Robert of Anjou ruled Provence as count while simultaneously holding the Kingdom of Naples, and his monetary policy reflected that dual authority — the carlin takes its name directly from Charles II (Carlo), his father, who first introduced the type. Robert's long reign produced considerable die variation across the series, catalogued under multiple Schlumberger groupings, suggesting sustained and heavy production from the Provençal mints over three and a half decades of otherwise relatively stable administration.
