Silver 10 Asses Gorgoneion series I: without dolphins

Populonia was one of the few Etruscan cities to strike its own coinage, and among the rarest issuers in the broader Italian series. Most Etruscan communities relied on neighboring Greek colonies or Rome for circulating metal. The Gorgoneion series represents Populonia's earliest silver issues, with the dolphin-free type generally assigned to the earlier portion of the fourth century on stylistic grounds.

The 10-as denomination points to a libral weight standard already in use before Rome's own aes grave system had fully consolidated — a detail that continues to complicate how numismatists align Etruscan and Roman monetary chronologies.
