Obverse description The Phoenician deity Melkart is depicted in heroic profile riding a hippocamp to the right, his extended left hand grasping a strung bow while his right hand holds the reins. The hippocamp is rendered with detailed musculature, its equine forepart transitioning into a fish-tail body. Beneath the creature, stylized wave lines appear above a dolphin swimming to the right, symbolizing the sea domain central to Tyrian iconography. The scene is executed in fine archaic relief characteristic of Phoenician die-cutting of the early 4th century BC.
