| Obverse lettering | IMP CAES VESPAS AVG P M TR P P P COS III (Translation: Imperator Caesar Vespasianus Augustus Pontifex Maximus, Tribunicia Potestate, Pater Patriae, Consul Tertium. Supreme commander (Imperator) Caesar Vespasian, emperor (Augustus), high priest, holder of tribunician power, father of the nation, consul for the third time.) |
| Reverse description | The reverse field is dominated by a four-line Latin inscription set within a prominent wreath of oak leaves (corona civica), tied at the base, with the wreath encircling the entire reverse design. The senatorial mark S C (Senatus Consulto) appears at the bottom of the field, below the wreath, attesting to the senatorial authority under which this bronze issue was struck. The bold, deeply incised letterforms of the inscription fill the interior of the wreath in a stark, epigraphic design with no figurative imagery. This reverse type, honouring Vespasian as the restorer of public liberty following the civil wars of 69 AD, is a programmatic statement of Flavian dynastic legitimacy. |
