| Obverse description | Diademed and draped bust of King Sauromates I facing right, the hair rendered in long locks falling to the neck, with traces of a paludamentum visible at the shoulder. The effigy is executed in a Hellenistic style characteristic of Bosporan royal portraiture. A beaded border encircles the design. The Greek legend ΒΑCΙΛΕYC CΑΥΡΟΜΑΤΗC, reading 'King Sauromates', runs around the periphery of the obverse field. |
