Obverse description Diademed and draped bust of King Rhoemetalces facing right, the hair rendered in fine parallel striations beneath the diadem, with a lengthy draped mantle falling over the shoulder. A trident is depicted upright in the field before the face, serving as a royal and maritime symbol of Bosporan authority. The circumferential Greek legend encircles the effigy, reading ΒΑϹΙΛΕΩϹ ΡΟΙΜΗΤΑΛΚΟΥ, identifying the ruler by name and title. The portrait is executed in the robust, somewhat provincial hammered style characteristic of Bosporan coinage of the mid-second century AD.
