Following Domitian's assassination in 96 AD and the subsequent damnatio memoriae declared by the Senate, Nerva's coinage consistently broadcast themes of restored liberty — a direct political signal that the Domitianic terror was over. The libertas publica type was not incidental; it was a calculated program, struck in the same year Nerva also revived the alimenta grain distributions and released citizens imprisoned under Domitian's treason statutes.
