| Obverse description | Laureate head of Emperor Nerva facing right, rendered in high relief with fine portraiture typical of Flavian-Nervan workshop engraving. The emperor's features are aged and naturalistic, with a pronounced brow and lean profile consistent with official imperial iconography of his reign. The encircling legend is incuse in Latin capitals, running along the outer rim of the field. The portrait is undrapedon the truncation, presenting the bare neck characteristic of early imperial sestertii. The overall style reflects the refined classicism of Rome's mint production under the adoptive emperors. |

Nerva issued this piece in 97 AD during a reign defined by its brevity and its deliberate repudiation of Domitian's memory. Following Domitian's assassination in 96 AD and the subsequent damnatio memoriae declared by the Senate, Nerva's coinage consistently broadcast themes of restored liberty — a direct political signal that the Domitianic terror was over. The libertas publica type was not incidental; it was a calculated program, struck in the same year Nerva also revived the alimenta grain distributions and released citizens imprisoned under Domitian's treason statutes.
