| Obverse description | Laureate head of Emperor Nerva facing right, rendered in high relief with fine portraiture typical of Flavian-Nervan workshop engraving. Nerva issued this piece in 97 AD during a reign defined by its brevity and its deliberate repudiation of Domitian's memory. Following Domitian's assassination in 96 AD and the subsequent damnatio memoriae declared by the Senate, Nerva's coinage consistently broadcast themes of restored liberty — a direct political signal that the Domitianic terror was over. The libertas publica type was not incidental; it was a calculated program, struck in the same year Nerva also revived the alimenta grain distributions and released citizens imprisoned under Domitian's treason statutes.
