| Beschrijving keerzijde | Aerial bird's-eye view of the harbour at Ostia, depicting the semicircular basin with a range of vessels moored within. A tall pharos (lighthouse) surmounted by a standing statue of Neptune dominates the upper portion of the composition, while the reclining figure of the river-god Tiber is depicted in the lower exergual area, facing left. The scene is rendered with remarkable spatial depth for Roman coinage, commemorating Nero's completion and expansion of the Claudian harbour works at Portus. The reverse legend, divided by the harbour design, records the dedication to the Augustan port of Ostia and the authorisation of the Senate. |
