Obverse description Bare-shouldered, laureate bust of Emperor Hadrian facing right, depicted with his characteristic short curly hair and cropped beard, rendered in high relief with confident Imperial portraiture. The emperor's neck and upper chest are visible, with drapery just discernible at the truncation. A beaded border frames the field, and the encircling legend runs clockwise around the effigy.

Reverse description Neptune, the god of the sea, rendered standing in contrapposto facing left, his right foot raised and resting upon the prow of a ship (rostrum). In his right hand he holds an acrostolium (a naval ornament from the prow of a captured vessel), and in his left hand he grasps a long trident, the emblematic attribute of his divinity. The composition commemorates Hadrian's safe return by sea, and the large senatorial mark S C (Senatus Consultum) appears in the field to either side of the figure.
