| Opis awersu | Laureate and draped bust of Emperor Galba facing right, rendered with strong portraiture characteristic of the late Julio-Claudian and early Flavian transition period, depicting an elderly, jowled visage with pronounced features. The bust is bare-headed save for the laurel wreath, with drapery visible at the truncation of the shoulder. | Opis rewersu | Standing figure of Libertas, the personification of public freedom, depicted full-length facing left in flowing robes. She holds a pileus (liberty cap) in her raised right hand and a long sceptre or staff in her left hand, the classic iconographic attributes associated with the granting of freedom to slaves. The senatorial control mark S C (Senatus Consultum) is placed in the field to either side of the figure at mid-height. The legend LIBERTAS PVBLICA runs around the upper and left portion of the field in clear Latin capitals, proclaiming the restoration of public liberty under Galba following Nero's reign. |
