| Obverse description | The obverse depicts the radiate effigy of the deified Augustus seated left upon a throne or curule chair, his right hand raised and his left hand holding a sceptre or branch, rendered in a classicising style characteristic of Flavian restruck coinage. The figure is shown semi-draped, with drapery falling across the lower body and legs, the throne rendered with decorative legs in the Roman manner. The surrounding legend DIVVS AVGVSTVS PATER runs clockwise in raised Latin capitals along the periphery of the flan. The overall style reflects a deliberate archaism, evoking Augustan prototypes as part of Titus's programme of restoring earlier imperial coinage types. The flan shows characteristic irregularity and surface patination consistent with a bronze struck sestertius of the Flavian period. |
