The surrounding circular legend IMP NERVA CAESAR AVGVSTVS REST runs along the periphery, identifying Nerva as the restitutor of this Augustan type. The legend and S C are rendered in well-spaced, clear capital letters consistent with issues of the Rome Mint under Nerva. The flan is irregular and slightly uneven, as expected of hammered bronze production. This restitution type consciously evoked the authority and memory of Augustus during Nerva's brief reign. |
