| Beschrijving keerzijde | The Altar of the Three Gauls (Ara Romae et Augusti) depicted in frontal view at the centre of the field, rendered as a rectangular sacrificial altar adorned with a garland frieze and flanked by two tall Victories standing on columns. The altar, erected at Lugdunum in 12 BC at the confluence of the Saône and Rhône rivers, served as the principal cult site for the imperial religion in Gaul. The abbreviated dedicatory legend ROM ET AVG appears in the lower field or exergue. The overall composition is bold and architecturally precise, consistent with the mint's official Lugdunum coinage under Augustus and Tiberius. A beaded border encircles the design. |
