Ebusus — modern Ibiza — was unusual among Balearic minting authorities in that it maintained an almost obsessive continuity of local religious imagery across centuries of Roman provincial coinage, long after neighboring mints had capitulated to purely imperial designs. This issue, struck under Tiberius, represents one of the later phases of that local tradition, when the island's mint was negotiating between Roman imperial authority and deeply entrenched Phoenician religious identity. The bilingual inscription itself — Latin alongside the Iberian script — reflects that tension directly.
