Beneath her feet, the river god Orontes (Orantes) swims left, symbolising the river upon which Antioch was situated. The abbreviated senatorial authority legend COS III S C is disposed in the field, attesting to Hadrian's third consulship and the Senatus Consultum authorizing bronze coinage. The composition follows the canonical reverse typology for Hadrianic provincial personification semisses issued from the Rome Mint during 124–125 AD. |
