| Beschrijving keerzijde | The reverse depicts Antioch personified as a turreted female figure seated left upon a rocky outcrop, her right hand extended and her left resting on the rock, representing the city's prominence in the eastern Roman world. Beneath her feet, the river god Orontes (Orantes) swims left, symbolising the river upon which Antioch was situated. The abbreviated senatorial authority legend COS III S C is disposed in the field, attesting to Hadrian's third consulship and the Senatus Consultum authorizing bronze coinage. The composition follows the canonical reverse typology for Hadrianic provincial personification semisses issued from the Rome Mint during 124–125 AD. |
