The legend names the two local magistrates responsible for the issue — Marcus Egnatius and Quintus Octavius — in their capacity as duovirs (IIviri) of Paestum, with the abbreviations S S C (semis, senatus consulto) denoting the denomination and the authority of the local senate. The wreath border encircling the inscription is a hallmark of colonial bronze coinage from Paestum during the Augustan period. The overall layout is characteristic of the civic coinage conventions adopted by Roman colonies in southern Italy. |
