Struck under Hadrian, this issue belongs to the revived Thessalian Koinon — a federal league Rome permitted to resume coin production as part of Hadrian's broader policy of cultivating Greek civic identity throughout the eastern provinces. The magistrate name ΝΙΚΟΜΑΧΟΥ places administrative responsibility on a local official, a practice the Koinon maintained consistently across its Hadrianic bronze issues.
The BCD collection reference here is significant: the BCD Thessaly II hoard provided the most systematic die-study of these small bronzes yet undertaken, revealing that the Koinon produced them in short, controlled runs rather than sustained mint output.
