Kastilo was one of the most significant mining towns in the upper Guadalquivir valley — modern Cazlona, near Linares in Jaén — and its bronze coinage circulated within an economy built almost entirely on silver extraction from the surrounding Sierra Morena. The city minted under Roman administrative tolerance during the late Republican period, a window that closed as Rome tightened provincial monetary control through the first century BC.
