The monetary union between Uri and Nidwalden was a pragmatic arrangement among two of the smaller Forest Cantons, pooling minting authority to produce coinage neither could efficiently issue alone. Joint cantonal issues of this type are scarce in the Swiss series precisely because such unions were short-lived — political friction and differing economic interests typically dissolved them within a generation.
