Lucerne's late 16th-century schilling issues fall within a period of intense monetary friction between Swiss city-states, each jealously guarding the right to mint small silver-copper coinage for local circulation. The city had secured imperial minting privileges, but neighboring cantons routinely complained about the flood of billon small change crossing cantonal boundaries — a problem that the Helvetic monetary conventions of the early 17th century attempted, with limited success, to address.
The Wielandt and Haas references together suggest this type saw at least minor die variation across its production run.
