正面描述 Facing bearded male head rendered in a bold, stylised Anglo-Saxon manner, occupying nearly the entire flan. The face displays large, almond-shaped eyes, a prominent nose, and a flowing beard indicated by incised lines below the chin. A radiate or diademed crown is suggested by projecting elements above the head. A pseudo-legend of debased Latin characters runs around the periphery within a beaded border, retaining no intelligible inscription. The overall treatment is characteristic of the degenerate portrait tradition found across Series Z sceats.

附加信息

Series Z sceattas were struck in the decades immediately following the Synod of Whitby, when Northumbrian ecclesiastical authority was consolidating and small-denomination silver coinage was proliferating rapidly across the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms without any centralized minting control. Attribution to a specific issuing authority remains genuinely unresolved — no mint site has been confirmed, and die-link studies by Metcalf suggest production was geographically concentrated but not definitively localized. The series is typologically distinct enough to be isolated, yet common enough that it clearly served active exchange rather than ceremonial or gift use.
