The outer field is subdivided into four quadrants, each filled with three rows of three pellets arranged in a regular grid pattern, producing a densely dotted decorative surround. No legend is present. This reverse type is characteristic of the Series J or related debased sceat issues of the late primary to secondary phase, and is executed with the bold but schematic style typical of hammered eighth-century Anglo-Saxon coinage. |
