| Obverse description | Stylized bust facing right, rendered in the so-called 'Indian head' convention characteristic of early Anglo-Saxon sceattas, featuring a schematized profile with prominent facial features and hair depicted as a series of parallel ridges or pellets. The design is executed in a debased, abstract manner typical of the later Series issues, with the head occupying the majority of the flan. No legend or inscription is present. This reverse type is characteristic of the Series J or related debased sceat issues of the late primary to secondary phase, and is executed with the bold but schematic style typical of hammered eighth-century Anglo-Saxon coinage. |
