The arms are surmounted by a royal crown of elaborate form. The surrounding circular legend, struck in Latin, reads: + SEBASTIANVS : I REX : PORTVGALIÆ : ET L - G, identifying the issuer as King Sebastião I of Portugal. The lettering is rendered in Gothic-influenced characters typical of mid-sixteenth-century Portuguese hammered gold coinage. |
