| Beschrijving voorzijde | The obverse displays the crowned royal arms of Portugal at centre, consisting of the escutcheon bearing the five quinas (inescutcheons) and the bordure of castles, flanked on either side by a bundle of arrows — a dynastic device — with the mint letters 'L' (left) and 'G' (right) positioned in the field to either side of the shield. The arms are surmounted by a royal crown of elaborate form. The surrounding circular legend, struck in Latin, reads: + SEBASTIANVS : I REX : PORTVGALIÆ : ET L - G, identifying the issuer as King Sebastião I of Portugal. The lettering is rendered in Gothic-influenced characters typical of mid-sixteenth-century Portuguese hammered gold coinage. |
