The xerafim was a unit of account inherited from the pre-Portuguese monetary system of Goa, and João V's administration spent considerable energy rationalizing its relationship to metropolitan Portuguese currency — largely without success. Dio, as a secondary Portuguese enclave north of Goa on the Gujarat coast, maintained its own mint partly because overland coin transport between the enclaves was unreliable and occasionally impossible during periods of Maratha pressure on Portuguese territorial boundaries.
The KM#15.1 designation separates this Dio striking from the Goa-struck 15.2, a distinction that matters: Dio mint gold from this reign is considerably scarcer by surviving population.
