Reverse description A full-length frontal figure of Saint Thomas (São Tomé), patron saint of India, is depicted in a hieratic style with a nimbus or halo encircling his head. The saint holds a lance or spear diagonally across his body in his right hand, a characteristic attribute of his martyrdom. The date is divided by the figure, with numerals appearing to the left and right of the saint. The engraving reflects the primitive but distinctive artistic conventions of early eighteenth-century Portuguese Indian hammered coinage.
