Kaithal was a Sikh Phulkian misl chieftainship whose rulers struck coins in the name of the Mughal emperor Shah Alam II — a common political fiction of the period, acknowledging nominal Mughal suzerainty while exercising complete local authority. Lal Singh governed Kaithal through decades of cascading instability: the disintegration of Mughal central power, Maratha incursions into the Punjab, and the slow consolidation of Sikh confederacy politics.
The British finally brought Kaithal under subsidiary alliance in 1809. Coin production in Shah Alam II's name continued well past any practical acknowledgment of his authority — he had been blinded by Ghulam Qadir in 1788 and ruled thereafter as a Maratha pensioner.
