Obverse description The obverse bears a bold Arabic legend arranged in two curved lines across the field, reading 'For the Island Grand Java,' with the date 1802 in Western numerals prominently displayed in the lower exergue, accompanied by the mint initial 'Z' for Surabaya. Small decorative pellet ornaments are interspersed between the lines of script, and a small cross-like ornament appears at the top of the field. The inscription is rendered in a characteristically robust Javanese-Arabic calligraphic style typical of VOC-era and Batavian Republic coinage, with the legends occupying the full width of the round flan. The coin's milled edge is clearly visible, consistent with its production at the Surabaya mint.
