Anna Ioannovna's rubles from this terminal run of her reign were struck at the St. Petersburg Mint under conditions of intense court intrigue — the Empress was in failing health by 1740, and the question of succession consumed the nobility far more than monetary administration. She died in October 1740, leaving a two-month-old great-nephew as nominal tsar and Ernst Johann von Biron as regent, a regency that collapsed within weeks. Coins bearing her effigy continued to circulate long after the political world that produced them had been swept away entirely.
