Riyal Countermarked Thaler

The Maria Theresa Thaler, struck in perpetual 1780 date regardless of actual minting year, became the dominant trade currency across the Red Sea and East African commercial networks throughout the nineteenth century. Egyptian and Sudanese authorities periodically countermarked circulating examples to assert fiscal control over foreign specie — this piece carries one such validation, converting the Thaler into an official Riyal denomination within the Ottoman-administered Sudanese monetary system.
