Obverse description Draped bust of Empress Maria Theresia facing right, wearing an imperial diadem and veil, rendered in high relief in the Baroque portrait style characteristic of the restrike Thaler. The obverse legend encircles the effigy in Latin. Superimposed on the field is an Arabic countermark reading احُمد ع (Ahmad A), applied by Sudanese authorities to validate the coin for local circulation, struck in an oval or irregular punch. The combination of the original Habsburg Latin legend and the applied Arabic countermark gives this piece its dual-script character.
