Lovisa Ulrika, Prussian-born queen consort and mother of Gustav III, died in July 1782 after years of political friction with the Swedish nobility that had repeatedly humiliated her son's court. This commemorative was struck the same year as her death, an unusually rapid production that reflects Gustav III's genuine grief — he had maintained a closer relationship with her than most European monarchs of the period managed with their parents.
Gustav had already demonstrated a taste for using coinage as political theater following his 1772 coup, which dismantled Sweden's Age of Liberty and restored royal prerogative. A memorial issue for his mother fit neatly into that pattern of dynastic messaging.
