A modern replica of the Byzantine gold solidus issued under Constantine VII Porphyrogennetos, who co-ruled with his father-in-law Romanos I Lekapenos before having him deposed and exiled to a monastery in 944. The original type introduced the facing bust of Christ as the primary obverse motif on Byzantine gold — a departure that influenced imperial coinage for centuries. This 1988 piece is a restrike or reproduction with no monetary authority behind it.
