| Reverse description | The reverse bears a central cross with quartered shields of the Portuguese royal arms in each quarter, each shield displaying the characteristic quinas (five escutcheons) of the House of Aviz. The design is enclosed within a circular legend in uncial Latin lettering identifying the king and his titles. The overall style is characteristic of hammered billon coinage of the early Aviz dynasty, with bold but somewhat irregular striking typical of the Lisbon mint in this period. |
