Enrique IV's coinage is among the most politically contentious in Castilian numismatic history. His reign fractured the nobility to the point where a faction of magnates staged the "Farce of Ávila" in 1465 — a mock deposition ceremony in which an effigy of the king was stripped of its crown and cast down. Rival coinage was subsequently struck in the name of his half-brother Alfonso, creating a period of competing monetary authorities that makes attribution of undated pieces genuinely difficult.
The Seville mint was among the most active of his reign. AB#692 encompasses considerable die variation across the issue's sixteen-year span.
