Enrique II's claim to the throne rested entirely on force. These reales were struck during his first reign, the period between his seizure of Castile from his half-brother Pedro I in 1366 and Pedro's restoration with English support under the Black Prince at Nájera in 1367 — followed by Enrique's final victory after Pedro's murder at Montiel in 1369. Toledo was one of Enrique's primary strongholds throughout the civil war, making its output during these years directly tied to his ability to finance continued campaigning against the legitimate Trastámara opposition.
