Beschrijving voorzijde Facing crowned bust of King Enrique II of Castile and León rendered in Gothic style, depicted full-face with crown surmounted by fleurs-de-lis and wearing a draped mantle. The king's features are stylized in the medieval Castilian manner, with the bust occupying the central field within a beaded inner circle. A small heraldic device (possibly a mint mark) appears to the left of the bust. The surrounding Latin legend reads ENRICVS DEI GRACIA REX CASTELLE, interrupted by the mint letter, and runs between the beaded inner circle and the irregular outer rim.

Aanvullende informatie

Enrique II came to power by murdering his half-brother Pedro I at Montiel in 1369 — a fratricide that ended a brutal civil war backed on opposing sides by England and France. These early billon reales were struck to assert the legitimacy of a usurper king, issued in the first years before his reign had fully consolidated. The AB#438 type dates to that narrow window before his monetary reforms settled into a more stable output.
