A circular Latin legend surrounds the device, reading ALFONSVS • II • DVX, identifying the issuing authority as Alfonso II d'Este, Duke of Ferrara. The strike is typical of late sixteenth-century Italian workshop production, with irregular flan edges and uneven field surfaces. The overall style is consistent with Ferrarese hammered coinage of the second half of the sixteenth century. |
