| Obverse description | Central field displays a displayed imperial eagle, its wings spread and head turned, rendered in the coarse, high-relief style characteristic of small hammered copper coinage of the Este duchy. The eagle, serving as the dynastic emblem of the Este rulers of Ferrara, occupies the full face of the coin. A circular Latin legend surrounds the device, reading ALFONSVS • II • DVX, identifying the issuing authority as Alfonso II d'Este, Duke of Ferrara. The strike is typical of late sixteenth-century Italian workshop production, with irregular flan edges and uneven field surfaces. The overall style is consistent with Ferrarese hammered coinage of the second half of the sixteenth century. |
