Comtat Venaissin, the papal enclave in Provence, sat as an awkward anomaly in an increasingly centralized France — administered not from Rome directly but through a cardinal-legate whose monetary authority was technically independent of both Paris and the Vatican treasury. In 1598, that role fell to Octave Acquaviva d'Aragona, appointed legate by Clement VIII. The quadruple écu was the highest-denomination gold issue struck under his administration, and surviving examples are rare enough that the three primary references — Divo féodales, Muntoni, and Friedberg — each record it with minimal die documentation.
