Ali ibn Yusuf ruled the Almoravid empire at its greatest territorial extent, but the years 1128–1132 mark the beginning of a slow unraveling — Almohad pressure from the Atlas Mountains was already destabilizing the dynasty's Moroccan heartland while its Iberian administrators struggled to hold al-Andalus. The qirat, a fractional silver denomination, was the workhorse of small-scale Andalusian commerce, and surviving examples attributable to Ali ibn Yusuf are far less frequently encountered than his gold dinars.
