Kartli's copper puli coinage of the early eighteenth century was produced under conditions of near-constant political pressure — the kingdom oscillating between Safavid Persian suzerainty and Ottoman interference, with Georgian kings frequently required to convert to Islam as a condition of retaining their thrones.
