Valerius Gratus served as prefect of Judaea from 15 to 26 CE — longer than any of his predecessors and immediately before Pontius Pilate. His tenure was marked by rapid, politically calculated replacements of the high priesthood: he appointed and removed four high priests in quick succession, a level of administrative interference that caused lasting friction with the Jewish population. These small bronzes were struck under his authority and circulated through a province already tense from that interference. The series is notably aniconographic, deliberately avoiding figural imagery in deference to Jewish religious law.
