Salome Alexandra ruled Judea for nine years following the death of Alexander Jannaeus in 76 BC — the only Hasmonean queen to reign in her own right. She could not serve as High Priest, that office being restricted to men, so she installed first John Hyrcanus II and later Aristobulus II in the role. The prutot struck during her regency bear the name of whichever son held the priesthood, which is why attribution to a specific prince remains uncertain without additional die study.
