The Sequani occupied the territory of modern Franche-Comté and were among the Gallic tribes most directly caught in the political catastrophe of 58 BC, when Caesar used their appeal for protection against Ariovistus and his Germanic Suebi as the pretext for his Gallic intervention. Their coinage was being struck, or had only recently been struck, as Caesar's legions moved through their lands and the tribe's political independence effectively ended.

The "large module" designation distinguishes this type from a smaller variant within the same series — a meaningful distinction, as die studies suggest the two were not simply successive issues but likely concurrent productions for different purposes or markets.
